Welcome!

Welcome to the virtual home of the JSU Math Club. What is the club about? First and foremost, it is for everyone in the JSU community who has an interest in mathematics. You don't have to be a math major to be a club member, and you don't have to be a club member to participate in any of the club's activities.

The JSU Math Club participates in the MAA Student Chapters Program (see the MAA Student Page.)

MAA Student Memberships

Through our MAA Student Chapter, all JSU students are eligible for student memberships in the MAA (Mathematical Association of America.) The cost is only $30 per year (in 2006). To sign up for a membership, obtain an application form either from me or from the following web site: MAA Student Chapter Information, where you will also find details on the benefits of membership. All former and new members can renew their membership now by completing the MAA Undergraduate Membership Application available in pdf format in this link or in hard copy from Dr. Dempsey. You can mail this form in yourself or give it to me and save the postage!

NCTM/ACTM Student Memberships

Another great opportunity for all of our preservice secondary mathematics teachers (i.e., math ed. majors!) is membership in NCTM, the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics, and its state affiliate, ACTM, the Alabama Council of Teachers of Mathematics. There are links to these two organizations from Dr. Dempsey's webpage if you'd like more information. There is an online NCTM Student Membership Application; student registration is only $38 per year (in 2007), which is a bargain. One major difference in membership categories, however, is that students get publications online rather than through the mail. When you have graduated and have a teaching job, you'll pay the regular membership fee and get hard copies of the journals. You can contact Dr. Dempsey for more information.

"What science can there be more noble, more excellent, more useful for men, more admirably high and demonstrative than this of mathematics?"     -- Benjamin Franklin

"Mathematical knowledge adds vigour to the mind, frees it from prejudice, credulity, and superstition."     -- John Arbuthnot

"One's intellectual and aesthetic life cannot be complete unless it includes an appreciation of the power and the beauty of mathematics."     -- Jerry P. King, The Art of Mathematics
