Catalog Course Description (According to the 1999-2000 catalogue):
Operations/properties of real numbers, exponents and complex numbers; factoring, solution/application of linear and quadratic equations; operations on polynomials and rational expressions. (Not open to students with credit in MS141 or higher).

Attendance:
Students must attend at least 80% of class meetings for the semester. Any student who does not attend at least 80% of the class meetings will receive an F grade for the course. A student must be present for the entire class in order to be counted present. Students present for all classes from the beginning to the end of each class will receive 10 bonus points added to their final exam grade.

Any student who receives failing grades during this course is urged to discuss this with me. Tutors may be obtained in the basement of the library through CII. Apply early!

Course Policies
1. Mastery of the material in this course requires regular and punctual attendance at all class activities in addition to considerable study and practice. Special accommodations for this course (school events, personal crises, etc.) should be addressed to the instructor. Roll will be called each day at the beginning of class and short quizzes will be given at the end of the classes. You are highly encouraged to participate in class.
2. Arrive to class on time. Students arriving late are responsible for remaining late in order that roll corrections may be made. If you must leave early, let me know before class begins.
3. If a student misses an exam, arrangements for the makeup exam should be made within 2 days after returning to class. It is the student's responsibility to request a make-up exam. The absence must be legitimate (doctor's excuse, etc.). Only two make-up exams are allowed. All others must be taken on time. Exams not taken will result in a zero. No make-up will be given on any missed pop test. All current JSU policies apply.

Course Content:
The course will cover the following sections of the text: Chapter 2 all sections Chapter 3 sections 3.1, 3.2, 3.3, 3.5 and 3.6 Chapters 4, 5 and 6 all sections Chapter 7 sections 7.2 and 7.4

All homework assignments are to be turned in at the beginning of class on the due date. Only 2 late assignments will be accepted. 5 points per day late (the weekend counts as 1 day will be deducted for late assignments. No homework that is over 2 days late will be accepted for credit. Points will be deducted on all projects that indicate copying has occurred. The above syllabus is tentative, adjustments will be made by the instructor as needed. Every effort should be made by the student to take exams as scheduled with the class. If there is a valid reason for missing an exam, the student may schedule a make-up exam date and time with the instructor within 2 days of returning to class.
