DG - Daily Grade Assignment MT - Major Test..... Will take the entire class period. WS - Worksheet |
| Thur. | Aug 30 | 3.4 T, G, F & A (Problems #1 - 33) |
| Tues. | Sep 4 | 3.5 T, G & F
I will try to get the notes for the definition of the derivative posted later today... Will advise here when they are supposed to be up. 4:30PM Update: Uploading the notes on derivatives. |
| Thur. | Sep 6 | 3.6F (Also do #39-44 in this section; however you may use the ``Short Way''
of finding the derivative.)
3.7F & A We did not specifically talk about how to write the equation of the tangent line (#39-44 in 3.6 and #59-64 in 3.7); however, you should have had this in algebra. If you need a review on how to write the equation of a given line see section 1.3 of this book. In partcular, you might look at Example 4 on pp 62, 63. Alternately, I have some MS 112 notes on this subject, so you can go to my webpage under an MS 112 class and under NOTES find #10 on Writing Equations of Lines. Of course, references to the book are not applicable, but the general method of doing the problems might appeal to you better than this book's approach. NOTES AVAILABLE: #1 Definition of Derivative & #2 Marginal Analysis. You will probably want to get the notes on Marginal Analysis and bring them to class next Tuesday. |
| Tues. | Sep 11 | 4.1F (See page 297 for the statement of and examples of the product
and quotient rules for derivatives.)
Bring the Marginal Analysis notes to class on Thur. We will be talking about applications in 3.8. If you missed class today, you will want to look at the notes on the Definition of Derivative on the last page under "WHEN DERIVATIVES DO NOT EXIST." It would probably also be a good idea to get someone's notes since I gave some graphs to help the understanding of this occurence. There are not specifically problems related to this in the book; however, you are responsible on the test for this intuitive understanding of when a derivative does not exist. |
| Thur. | Sep 13 | 3.8F, G & A; 4.1A; 4.2F
Review Log & e: See Notes for log & e on webpage AND/OR 2.2R & 2.3R. These Notes have been uploaded. The reference to Ch 10 does not apply to your calculus book. I did these notes for the MS 112 class. |
| Tues. | Sep 18 | 4.3F
See TEST date below. |
| Thur. | Sep 20 | 5.1G; 5.1F |
| Tues. | Sep 25 | We reviewed for the Test and clarified some ideas. Problems like #49 - 56 in 5.1 will NOT be on this test. We discussed a way to understand these; however, I am going to let you have more time to develop your understanding of that viewpoint before testing. |
| Thur. | Sep 27 | Major Test #1
Your results as to what to rework will be emailed to you at the latest by Saturday. Take Home and Rework are due on Tuesday. If you can't make it to class, make sure someone delivers it to me, even if they have to slide it under my door. |
| Tues. | Oct 2 | 4.4F
We did both implicit and logarithmic differentiation today. |
| Thur. | Oct 4 | 5.2F & A; 5.3F
NOTE: Didn't get to mention a fact you will need in 5.3F #11-15: Think of acceleration as the second derivative of position. We have discussed the intuitive thinking that instantaneous change of position relative to time is velocity which can be found by taking the first derivative of the position function. Since acceleration is the rate of change of velocity with respect to time, it makes sense that the derivative of the velocity function would be acceleration, so that is the second derivative of the position function. |
| Tues. | Oct 9 | 5.3Ga; 5.3A
From my web page, print out WS#1 and the 2 answer pages. Bring to class on Thursday. Notice Tentative Test #2 date below. |
| Thur. | Oct 11 | Finish 5.3A; 5.3Gb; Also do WS#1 that you printed off & brought to class.
NOTE: TEST AND DUE DATES BELOW. |
| Tues. | Oct 16 | 5.4A
Test Date Below. |
| Thur. | Oct 18 | No new assignment. We will review for the test.
Note test date and due dates below. |
| Tues. | Oct 23 | MAJOR TEST #2
Notification of problems to be reworked will be available to you by class on Thur. |
| Thur. | Oct 25 | Midterm grades turned in for D or F averages
TAKE HOME TEST given out today. DUE on Tuesday 6.1F & A Notes #5 summarizing Basic Integral techniques will be useful. Problems to be reworked should be emailed to you by sometime Friday (possibly earlier, but don't count on it!) Midterm grades have been posted. See me if you have a question. |
| Tues. | Oct 30 | 6.2F |
| Thur. | Nov 1 | Last Day to Drop without academic penalty (no signature required. Note: Since
the 2nd test may not be back to you by this day, I will allow those that have taken
both tests to get their results on Test #2 and will sign them as drop passing if
they wish.)
Sorry that I did not get Tuesday's assignment uploaded til now ... I can't do that from home. 6.3G; 6.4F |
| Tues. | Nov 6 | 6.4G; 6.4A; Graphing WS#2
I gave this WS out in class; however, it is on my web page, so if you were absent, you can print it off. Notice that the answers are on the "Answer Pages" that we used for the previous graphing worksheet. |
| Thur. | Nov 8 | 7.2G; 8.1F; 8.3F |
| Tues. | Nov 13 | Finish 8.3F; 8.6F
See Test & Due dates below: |
| Thur. | Nov 15 | STUDY FOR TEST!
Highlighted Syllabus is posted. IMPORTANT NOTE: As stated in class, it will be much easier for me to email you your initial test results without possible email address errors if you will send me an email to reply to. Send to: ewhite@jsu.edu Subject: MS 120 Test Results Include your name in the email. If you have questions that you need answered otherwise, please send a separate email with Subject: MS 120 Questions. The reason for this is that I will not open the other email til time to email you test results. I think if I open an email at my office, then I can not access it from at home on GEM. |
| Tues. | Nov 20 | Major Test #3
Take Home and Blank Rework given out in class. I will get your rework results to you as quickly as possible. Please check out the take home part early on, so if there are any errors or questions, I can get them taken care of quickly so that everyone has time to complete the tests. See Due Date below: AFTER TEST NOTE: A couple of you were inadvertantly given two copies of the Rework Test. Don't worry about it. It was my fault, and I was able to get 2 more run off for the last two students. PLEASE SEND YOUR EMAIL FOR TEST RETURN! |
| Thur. | Nov 22 |
