MT - Major Test..... Will take the entire class period.
WS - Worksheet
Thur. Jan 4 4.4; WS#1 & WS#2; Print out Syllabus
If you are here, you have done part of your assignment, which was to get familiar with my webpage. Make sure you know how to get the worksheets, etc.
Tues. Jan 9 4.5A, B, C; 9.1; WS#3-#5
These worksheets are a review of the concepts from 5.1 thru 5.3 involving radicals. Next Wed. (9/13), we will be covering 5.4 which builds on these radical skills, so it would be good to make sure you have the proper background before then.
NOTE to 11:00 Class: Sorry! I forgot to do a problem similar to #1 - 10 assigned in 4.5A. These can be done by long division, but it is easier to factor the numerator (all of this group has a greatest common factor), then simplify ("cancel") with the denominator. All of these particular problems have a polynomial answer (That is, it is no longer a fraction, just as when 16/2 simplifies to 8). I have no problem with you doing these problems "in your head" if you see it as dividing the monomial denominator into each term of the numerator. This is correct also. If this explanation does not make sense, be sure to ask me about them on Thur.
Thur. Jan 11 4.6A & B
We will be covering radicals in 5.4 on Tuesday, so finish up your background work from WS#3 & #4.
EVEN ANSWERS to 4.6B: #46. 17.5 ft by 28.75 ft; #48. 60 degrees; #50. 9, 71; #52. 9450 females, 6750 males; #54. $147,000; #56. 19; #58. $225,000; #60. W = 21 cm; L = 36 cm.
Tues. Jan 16 Finish 4.6B; 5.4A & B; 8.1A & B; WS#6
Thur. Jan 18 Finish 8.1C; 8.2A & B; WS#7; 5.5; 6.2B
NOTE & APOLOGY to the 11:00 class: You were right about the time. I don't know what happened to my watch. Following is a brief explanation of the method to use on solving the equations in 5.5 & 6.2B. You will be better off to try doing them, so that we do not get behind on our material for the semester.
To solve equations with radicals, most students have either seen or have the intuition to "Square both sides of the equation." This is the correct procedure; BUT there are some cautions:
FIRST: You must ISOLATE the radical before squaring. If you don't, then you are squaring a binomial with a radical which will result in another radical as a middle term. Obviously, that would not create the desired result of "removing the radical."
SECOND: ANSWERS MUST BE CHECKED!!!! This is because the process of squaring both sides of an equation may introduce some extraneous (incorrect) solutions. On the test you must SHOW your check.
EVEN ANSWERS TO 8.2B: (NOTE: I do not have a good way to do fractions in this setting, so the answers with fractions will look a little strange here to make sure that correct meaning is preserved. On the test, I would not want your answer to have the parentheses I had to use.... You should be using "straight over style" for fractions. Just as mixed numbers should never be used in an algebraic expression, slant fractions can cause a confusion and/or wrong meaning. That is why I had to put the parentheses to clarify.)
#18. f(x) = (-3/5)x - (13/5) #20. f(x) = x - 1 #22. f(x) = -3x + 13
UPDATE ON CALENDAR QUESTION: Those that asked me for the tentative test dates: Look under COURSE INFO and click on Semester Calendar for Assignments. This should bring up the sheet that I showed you in class, and it has the tentative test dates for the semester. I do not put the test dates here until I announce them in class.
Tues. Jan 23 (Finish 5.5; 6.2B)*; 6.2A, C & D; 6.3A & B
*NOTE: This was covered in the 12:45 class last Thursday, and in the 11:00 class today.
NOTE for 6.2 & 6.3: Since we have temporarily skipped section 6.1, you will need to know that answers that contain a negative under a square root are also to be included from now on. Use the basic relation: "square root of -1" = i to deal with answers that contain negatives under a square root. You can see a few examples on page 282, top half of the page.
MAJOR TEST #1 DATE IS BELOW. SEE TUES, JAN 30 FOR LOCATION!
HIGHLIGHTED SYLLABUS for MT#1 is on the web page under COURSE INFO and will be available in class on Thursday.
Thur. Jan 25 Finish 6.3A & B; 6.1A, B & C.
NOTE: Remember that for the Test on Tues., from 6.3, I will give you an equation that is already set with the coefficient of the square term being 1. So finishing 6.3 with the other type and all of the 6.1 assignment will be covered on Test #2. (So you can wait and do that assignment after the test if you wish.)
MAJOR TEST #1 and ANNOUNCEMENT BELOW.
Tues. Jan 30 MAJOR TEST #1
FOR TESTS ONLY, WE WILL MEET IN ROOM 355 AH. This is on the 3rd floor directly above the Student Lounge. I will allow you to start a few minutes early or remain a few minutes after class. DO NOT BE LATE!
The only thing you will need for the test is pencil(s) and a straight edge. Working space, graph blank, where needed, and scratch paper are provided. (I will have a straight edge you may borrow; however, be ready to draw your line and return it so that others may use it also.)
MAKE SURE CELL PHONES ARE OFF BEFORE ENTERING THE ROOM!
Thur. Feb 1 5.6A, B, C & D; 6.4
NOTE on 6.4: In #1 - 10, you do NOT have to do the parts about figuring out how many and what kind of solutions will occur... JUST SOLVE & SIMPLIFY properly. In #11 - 50, you do NOT have to do the check by the sum and product relationships.
Tues. Feb 6 6.5A, B, C & E; WS#9; WS#10
Most of 6.5 is putting together solving equations that are either quadratic or of a quadratic form. If you are either given an equation that is initially quadratic or if it "becomes" quadratic after changing out of rational form as we did in 4.6, then consider the best way to proceed. Generally, get the equation set = 0 and determine if it will factor. If so proceed as usual; if not, then decide whether to extract roots ("square root" both sides), solve by completing the square or by using the quadratic formula. For #33-40, first FOIL factor; then set each 2nd degree factor = 0 and use extracting roots to finish. There are not many word problems, so I strongly suggest getting WS#9 for more practice. WS#10 is also strongly recommended to get you ready for the inequality notation we will be using in solving non-linear inequalities Thursday.
EVEN ANSWERS to 6.5C (Sorry that I can't make these look like proper form; but you should be able to check yourself): #34. plus or minus square root of 3; plus or minus 3 times square root of 2; #36. plus or minus 2; plus or minus 2 times square root of 15 over 5; #38. plus or minus 3/2; plus or minus i times square root of 5; #40. plus or minus square root of 6 over 3; plus or minus 3 times square root 2 over 2.
EVEN ANSWERS to 6.5E: #56. Larry drove 52 mph, Terrell drove 54 mph #58. 20 mph
Thur. Feb 8 6.6; 8.6 (Not responsible for domain questions)
Print out and bring WS#11 & WS#12 to class on Tuesday. These worksheets go with sections 8.3 & 8.4 on parabolas. You will definitely need to have these worksheets to do the homework required.
Tues. Feb 13 WS#11 & #12
These are to be used in conjunction with sections 8.3 & 8.4 from the book. I use a slightly different format from the book, so you will want to get notes if you weren't there today. There are notes available on my web page to help explain the way we are doing parabolas.
Major Test #2 date is below.
Thur. Feb 15 Finish parabolas; 9.2A & B
NOTE: Pay attention to the 2nd page of WS#11. It gives you a good idea as to the way questions will be asked on the test with respect to parabolas.
Bring Calculators and WS#15 & #16 on Tuesday.
Major Test #2 date is below.
Tues. Feb 20 Test Review & Calculator Instruction.
AFTER TEST HOMEWORK: WS#15 & WS#16

Thur. Mar 1 9.5
Tests were returned today, and I was able to get them averaged with the first test before I turned in midterms, so your midterm grade should reflect the average of your first two tests.
DROPPING: Monday is the last day to drop passing without my signature, so if you are failing now and decide to remain in the class, you should discuss your situation with me.
IF YOU DECIDE TO DROP, and you will drop below full time status, be aware of consequences with Financial Aid, Scholarships, and being listed on your parents' insurance.
NOTE: Monday March 5 is the last day to begin taking Skills Tests. I may have had today as the last date; however, I will let you start as late as Mon.

Highlighted Syllabus has been posted for MT#3
Thurs. Mar 29 No new assignment.... We reviewed for the test.
NOTICE TO BOTH CLASSES: After almost everyone had left the 11:00 class, I realized that I had NOT put 6.5D on the Highlighted Syllabus. Even though everyone should have known that these were to be included on the test, I do not feel that it is fair to include them when they were not indicated on the Highlighted Syllabus. Problems from this section can still be included as Bonus Problems. They will also be included on the Final Exam.
REMEMBER TEST DATES BELOW. GO TO ROOM 355 AS FOR THE PREVIOUS TWO TESTS.
FINAL EXAM STUDY GUIDE: I will try to get your Final Exam Study Guide posted on my web page by 4/5 so that you can start studying for the Final. If you look for the guide and it is not up, particularly if you look for it before the 5th, you may go to my MS 112 class from Fall 2006 and pull up that study guide.... There may be a few changes, but it will be pretty much the same.
BRING FINAL EXAM STUDY GUIDE TO CLASS THE LAST WEEK... Remember, I will not be lecturing.... You will be asking me questions as with test reviews.
Tues. Apr 3 MT#3 Part I (NO CALCULAORS)
GO TO ROOM 355 AS FOR THE PREVIOUS TWO TESTS.
Thur. Apr 5 MT#3 Part II (MUST HAVE CALCULATOR!)
