When you boot a PC connected to a network, the network typically displays a logon dialog box. You have two options in that dialog box: you can log into the local computer and not connect to network or you can connect to network.

Advantages of connecting to a network: Share devices, share memory etc.

Different types of Operating Systems:

Windows: There are many different versions of Windows such as: Windows 3.1, Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows Me, Windows NT, Windows XP etc.

Each newer version featured more improved multimedia capabilities, better system protection, faster booting process, more internet ready activities and games, more options for customizing the desktop interface, improved support for DVD and USB devices etc.

Mac OS: Macintosh Operating System.

UNIX: Can support Desktop PC or Server.  UNIX is built for any framework of chips.

Linux: is a version of UNIX. It was released as freeware software. So the source code is available to users who can modify it according to their needs. Some companies have commercialized Linux. Some examples of Linux commercial software are Red Hat, SCO etc.

Utility Programs:

Antivirus Programs: Antivirus program should be setup to run the entire time the PC is on and perform full system scan periodically.

Diagnostic and Disk management Programs:

Diagnostic Programs evaluate your system, looking for problems and making recommendation.

Disk Management Programs diagnose and repair programs related to hard drive. Example: Disk Defragmentor

Diagnose and Disk Management Utilities can perform tasks such as checking windows registry for errors, cleaning out extra system files that are no longer needed, checking hard drive for errors etc.

Uninstall Utilities: Programs should be deleted using these utilities. Otherwise a lot of data may store in the disk over the time. Example: Add Remove Software option in your control panel
