Catalog Description
An
introduction to solving business problems using structured programming
techniques and methodology for both interactive and batch processing. Integral, scheduled lab.
Prerequisites
A grade of C or better in both CS 231 and CS 232. You must
meet the prerequisites to take this course.
Policies
Class roll
will be taken. The necessity to attend
class on a regular basis will soon be apparent.
Don't expect private lectures when you cut class or lab. Students are responsible for all announcements and assignments made
in class.
Alternate test
schedules will be arranged only when the absence from the test is cleared with
the instructor well in advance.
The validity of the excuse is determined by the instructor. If you are having difficulty with this class,
please come to see me before it is
too late to salvage your grade.
Assignments
turned in one class period late will be dropped a letter grade (-10%). Work turned in later than one class period
will NOT be accepted. If you are
absent from class on the day work is due, make sure someone turns in the work
for you. Graded lab assignments CANNOT be made up. All graded lab assignments will be completed
and turned in during lab time unless otherwise noted.
All work
submitted for credit is expected to be the work of the individual student. Group discussion and study of the assignments
is permitted. When you begin to
prepare your assignment, all collaboration must cease. Collaboration on writing the programs is
considered plagiarism which will
result in a grade of zero for all
students involved. DO NOT leave copies of your program in the trash or on C drive. If someone picks up your program and copies
it, or if I find it in the trash, you will be given a zero for carelessness. You must backup
your work, losing a file is not an acceptable excuse.
"All
students are expected to attend class fully prepared with appropriate materials
and all devices which make noise turned to the off position (e.g., cellular
phones, pagers, personal stereos, etc.).
Any student behavior deemed disruptive by the professor will result in
expulsion of the student from the classroom, with an absence for the day and
possible disciplinary action." According to the Americans with Disabilities Act, JSU will
provide reasonable access and appropriate accommodations for otherwise
qualified disabled students. If you need such access or accommodations, please
consult with your professor immediately.

Method of Instruction
The text,
assignments, and class instruction will expose the student to the statements
and syntax of structured COBOL. The
COBOL program assignments and related class discussion will provide students an
opportunity to solidify their knowledge of the language and of structured
programming techniques. Students are
urged to complete the assigned readings and to work on problems in advance
so that classroom time can be effectively utilized.
In order to succeed in this course, the best advice
that I can give is to
