PREREQUISITES

CS232, CS250, Knowledge of Micro-Focus COBOL (PC)

COURSE OBJECTIVES

To develop an understanding of the advanced techniques of COBOL, to gain experience in the application of these techniques to a variety of business programming problems, and to become aware of good programming techniques.  Topics covered include Web and interactive screens, data validation, sorting, tables, arrays, and direct access files.

POLICIES

Alternate test schedules will be arranged only when the absence from the test is cleared with the instructor well in advance.

Meaningful and relevant class discussion is encouraged.  Students are responsible for all announcements and assignments made in class.

Class roll will be taken.  The necessity to attend class on a regular basis will soon be apparent.  If you enter the classroom late, it is your responsibility to inform me after class of your tardiness.

All work submitted for credit is expected to be the work of the individual student.  Group discussion and study of the assignments are permitted; however, all collaboration will cease when you begin to write the assigned programs.  Collaboration on writing the programs is considered plagiarism which will result in a zero grade for all parties involved.  DO NOT leave copies of your programs in the trash in the lab.  If someone picks up a copy of your program and copies it, you will be given a zero for carelessness.  If I find any of your printouts in the lab, you will receive a zero for the assignment.

Assignments turned in one class period late will be dropped a letter grade.  Work turned in later than one class period will NOT be accepted.  If you are in grade trouble please come to see me before it is too late to salvage your grade.  My office location is noted above.

"All students are expected to attend class fully prepared with appropriate materials and all devices which make noise turned to the off position (e.g., cellular phones, pagers, personal stereos, etc.).  Any student behavior deemed disruptive by the professor will result in expulsion of the student from the classroom, with an absence for the day and possible disciplinary action."

METHOD OF INSTRUCTION

The text and class discussion will expose the students to the statements and syntax of COBOL. The program assignments and related class discussion will provide students an opportunity to solidify their knowledge of the language and of programming techniques.  Students are urged to complete the assigned readings and to work on problems in advance so that classroom time can be effectively utilized.

Each programming assignment will build on the previous assignment, so every assignment must eventually run correctly in order to go on to the next assignment.

GRADES

Test grades will be based on method or approach, accuracy, orderliness, and the answer.  Grades on programs will be based on approach, technique, completeness, correctness of program output, and timely completion of the programs.

The final grade consists of:

            Midterm test                             20%

            Problems & Quizzes                 5%

            Programs (4-5)                        45%

Final exam                               30%             date Thursday, 12/5 at 1:00

                                                            100%
